Avel started dancing at the relatively late age of 19. His first performance was with the University of the Philippines Filipiniana Dance Group performing Philippine ethnic and folk dances. With this group, and later with the U.P. Filipiniana Alumni Dance Group under Mrs. Corazon Iñigo, he toured in various provinces, held concerts, and eventually performed in Brunei, Macau, United Kingdom, France, Italy, Belgium, Switzerland, and Japan. His Jazz and Modern dance training came under the tutelage of Douglas Nierras and Powerdance, with whom he performed in several highly acclaimed concerts and toured in New York and Los Angeles, USA, and in Vancouver and Edmonton, Canada. He was also part of the original cast of "Metanoia", the Philippine's official entry to the 1st Alexander Onassis International Prizes. He toured as part of the Philippine Department of Tourisms' WOW Philippines USA Road Show. He has also performed in SK Productions' "A Chorus Line". A versatile dancer and teacher, he has taught and performed Jazz, Hip-hop, Modern and Ballroom for several years. He has choreographed several theater plays, school presentations, cotillions, corporate productions, TV commercials, and music videos.
