Recital Concert on May 21, 2005 at the Teatro Aguinaldo, Camp Aguinaldo, Quezon City
We live in an age of convergence. That is, the union of previously unconnected things and events, the blurring of distinction between different mediums, the melding of art and technology.
Take for example the case of music and television. Before the advent of the MTV Music Television channel in the early 80's, music was primarily enjoyed over the radio or played on their cassette decks. Nowadays, a certified music hit cannot do without a music video. Audio must now come with a visual component. An artist is not anymore just a singer… he/she must also be an actor and a dancer. In other words, one must be a consummate performer.
This is not unlike what dancers have been experiencing ever since ballet as we know it was introduced. The physical movement of dance has long been laid down to music. Full-length ballets and today's dance-theater pieces have demanded that dancers act their parts and not just go through the steps mechanically. And, in our case, everything is done live. The dancers, the music, the props, the lights… all come together to form a visual and auditory experience, a once-in-a-lifetime performance... a convergence indeed!
Unlike today when everything comes at the touch of a button, a good performance is not as easily achieved. Often, we see on television only the finished product and not the process. This process is exactly what our students have been preparing and training for during the past six weeks. They have endured the summer heat, sweated through exhausting dance classes, and suffered through illness and body pains to bring you the spectacle that you are about to see tonight.
All of this would not have been possible if not for the collective efforts and support of the teachers, the staff, the workshop students themselves, and most importantly, the parents. Thank you all for joining us this summer and thank you all for watching tonight.
Coming together tonight are all the dancers, the lights and the sounds, the teachers and the students, as we bring you “MTV Live! On Airdance” in 5... 6... 7... 8...
