Every grownup recalls the time when he was a kid rushing home from school just to catch the early evening cartoons on TV. During that blissful half-hour or two, homework is but a distant task and the animated hand-drawn images moving onscreen are his idols. Better yet, one can wake up to a whole Saturday morning with nothing but 5 hours of cartoons and kid shows to watch (Parents, “Saturday Fun Machine” ring any bells?). Fun-filled, exciting, fascinating, and rousing, these shows were a constant source of amusement, inspiration, and laughter.
Cartoons, or the now popular animé, inevitably form part of a person's fondest childhood memories, often recalled with an eager smile and the occasional humming of the theme song. The characters were our heroes, our companions, our best friends… even our alter egos. It is with this in mind that we bring you Airdance Animania… a tribute to the animé's of yesterday and today.
Often, we as spectators only see the final product as shown on TV or on stage. Keep in mind that an animated cartoon is drawn frame by frame before it can be shown as a moving, living image. In much the same way, a dance first starts off with the basic steps, honed to refinement, before they can be assembled to what you'll see tonight. That is exactly what the workshoppers have been working so hard for over the past 6 weeks. They have sweated it out, endured body aches, and rehearsed repeatedly to bring you their own version of the times we sat in front of the TV enjoying our cartoons. In the process, it was a fun and learning experience for both students and teachers… perhaps something we'll all look back to with an eager smile and the occasional humming of the theme song.
So sit back, bring out the popcorn, tune out your parents' repeated calls to clean your room, and enjoy the show.
